GitHub introduces data residency option for EU developers

GitHub has announced the introduction of data residency capabilities for developers in the European Union starting October 29, 2024. This new feature for Enterprise Cloud will enable organizations to store their GitHub code and repository data in their chosen geographic location

“We’ve been hearing from companies for years about the importance of managing where their data resides,” said Jim Wang, VP of engineering at GitHub. “With data residency, organizations can now store their GitHub code and repository data in the geographical area of ​​their choice.”

This update aims to empower more developers around the world to take advantage of what GitHub describes as “the world’s most AI-powered developer platform”.

Mark Weir, UK & Ireland director at Check Point Software, said: “Data residence has been a key issue since cloud computing became possible. It is particularly important for regulated businesses, where regulations vary by country of operation.”

Weir also highlighted the importance of data space in situations where data may need to be moved due to issues with the provider, emphasizing stringent requirements for handling Crown data

The data residency component of Enterprise Cloud provides advanced user control and a unique namespace on GHE.com, which is separate from the open-source cloud on GITHub.com. It leverages the security, business continuity and disaster recovery capabilities of Microsoft Azure.
